Abstract

As strong as a rock, the Foro Boca rises above the sea on the Gulf of Mexico. With their rough-cast exposed concrete facades, the angular volumes of this new concert hall by Rojkind Architects resemble a huge group of boulders. The contrast to the James Simon Galerie in Berlin could scarcely be greater. For this new point of access to the Museum Island, David Chipperfield Architects Berlin designed a filigree concrete colonnade that asserts itself as a light and airy viewing platform over the River Spree, opening up new perspectives to the urban surroundings. The slender columns were constructed as precast concrete elements with white marble ¬aggregate. The architects deliberately adopted the motif of the colonnade as a reference to the historical museum architecture nearby, translating it into a contemporary form that also avails itself of present-day production methods. In the June edition of DETAIL, we have compiled a number of examples of modern developments that demonstrate the diversity of concrete. Just as varied as the individual buildings portrayed here – whether rough or smooth, light or powerful – are the details and the forms of construction using this material.

Abstract

Abstract

Brutalism is back. Vilified for decades as the stepchild of modernism, brutalist architecture is now enjoying a comeback as the latest discovery among digital trendsetters: uncompromising and incredibly daring, the colossal structures of the 1960s and 1970s both stand as testament to the postwar years and inspire contemporary architectural language. Massive, Expressive, Sculptural – Brutalism Now and Then offers a sophisticated comparison of historical and contemporary brutalist buildings. Similarities as well as differences are explored and analyzed over 300 pages using a series of impressive architectural projects. Large-scale sculptural forms, coarsely finished materials and floor plans that defy convention merge with contemporary design to generate enthralling new creations. Bunker-like bungalows reveal classy interiors, vast religious buildings disclose innovative perspectives and gigantic concrete structures surprise with delicate, artistic elements. Showcasing examples of brutalism from the past and the present by some of the greatest and most interesting architects, this publication enables a profound understanding of this very undervalued style of architecture.BrutalismConcrete

Abstract

Experiments to characterize the effects of moisture content and temperature on the mechanical properties of concrete were conducted. Based on these experiments, a new overall material model capable of predicting the mechanical behaviour of concrete subject to elevated temperatures up to 100 °C was developed. The material model estimates the time, temperature and moisture dependency of the compressive and tensile strength, creep and shrinkage of concrete.

Abstract
